Why Wedding Dress Sizes Are Different: Everything Brides Need to Know

Why Bridal Gown Sizes Are Different And Why the Number on the Label Doesn’t Matter

One of the biggest surprises for many brides is discovering that the size they wear every day isn’t the size they’ll order in a wedding dress. It’s completely normal, and more importantly, it’s nothing to worry about.

Bridal sizing isn’t the same as high street sizing.

Unlike your favourite high street brands, most bridal designers still use traditional European size charts that were created many years ago. Over time, everyday clothing brands have adjusted their sizing to reflect modern shopping habits, often making garments larger while keeping the same size on the label. This is known as vanity sizing.

Bridal designers, however, have largely stayed with their original measurements. That means a bride who comfortably wears a UK 12 in everyday clothes may find herself ordering a bridal size 14 or even 16.

It’s simply a different measuring system not a reflection of your body.

We order to your measurements, not the number.

At Felicity Rose Bridal, we take measurements of your bust, waist and hips before ordering your gown against the designer size chart. Your dress is ordered to fit your largest measurement in alignment to the style of dress you have chosen. For example, if your hips measure as a size 16 but your waist is a size 12, we’ll order the size 16. This gives your seamstress enough fabric to create a beautiful, tailored fit in all the right places.

Ordering a smaller size because the label feels nicer just won’t work. A dress can be expertly taken in, but letting one out is often very limited.

Your seamstress creates the magic.

Think of your wedding dress as the starting point, not the finished product.

Professional bridal alterations are designed to make your gown fit as though it was made just for you. Your seamstress will carefully shape the dress to your curves, adjusting the bust, waist, straps, hem and other details to achieve the perfect fit.

The result isn’t just a dress that fits, it feels comfortable, moves beautifully and gives you confidence on your wedding day.

Please don’t focus on the number.

We know it can feel disheartening when the size on your wedding dress label is larger than you’re used to seeing. But remember, no one will see that label. And years from now, when you’re looking back at your wedding photographs, the only thing you’ll notice is how incredible you looked.

Trust the process.

Our job is to find the gown that makes you feel amazing. We’ll take your measurements, recommend the correct size, and work with an experienced seamstress to create a fit that’s unique to you.

So if your bridal size is different from your everyday wardrobe, don’t panic. It’s completely normal, expected, and part of almost every bride’s journey. Because the most important thing isn’t the number on the label it’s how you feel when you walk down the aisle.
